frosch&portmann was founded in summer 2009 by co-owners Eva Frosch and HP Portmann, who both studied Art History at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Eva Frosch moved to New York in 2004 where she was a fellow at the Museum of Modern Art, worked for the artist Peter Halley, and, before opening her own gallery, was the director at Jack the Pelican Presents in Brooklyn. HP Portmann lives in Zurich and is the curator of a renowned Swiss private collection; he also works at Verein für Originalgraphik (VFO), a non-profit organization for graphic art. frosch&portmann is committed to the representation of emerging international artists with an affinity towards a witty intelligence.

Located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the gallery draws upon the vibrant energy of the artistic community in this burgeoning neighborhood. We are interested in presenting an innovative yet art-historically grounded curatorial model that challenges the thinking. Art should stimulate, maybe provoke – but above all stands lasting quality.

Vicki Sher, Paper Giant, 2019, Acrylic, ink and collage on paper, 72 x 60 inches

Vicki Sher works intuitively, making what she wants to see. She starts each new surface, mostly paper, with color or line, and proceeds in dialogue with the material. Often it seems the drawing knows what it wants to be. This recent work distills everyday objects and figures into geometric shapes. A semicircle is a bowl, a moon, a mountain, a breast, etc. Shapes float, stack up, interact, and act as stand-ins for everyday activity. The work stems, as a logical progression, from earlier interests in still life, domestic life and the poetry of the quotidian, but it is also a sudden and dramatic departure. These drawings are unapologetically concerned with beauty and decoration, balance, movement, and pleasure.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1966, Vicki Sher received her BFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Her work has been exhibited at public institutions including the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, PA and The Phillips Museum at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. She is the recent recipient of a MacDowell Colony Fellowship award and a VCCA Fellowship award. She has participated in numerous art fairs worldwide, including VOLTA Basel, NADA and PULSE. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. The artist is represented by frosch&portmann, New York.
