For VOLTA 2020 Sim Smith will present a two-man painting show by British artists Tim Garwood and David Surman. Working from two adjacent studios in South East London, there is a constant narrative that exists between the artists and their work.

Although visually different, both artists make paintings that explore the past, the present and where we are now and what the future could hold. Garwood and Surman explore ideas that seem more important now than ever; ideas around empathy, the awareness of our existence, our impact on others and the natural environment. They explore how we can improve and enrich our lives, embracing the positive steps that can be taken to secure a confident and sustainable future.

Garwood works by combining paint with found materials, reconstructing elements of sensory memory and impressions long after the original moment has passed. The making is quite subconscious, in painting, collage or drawing, retrieving the sense of a memory while simultaneously linking the work to the present.

Surman makes works that peer into the non-human world. By rethinking the importance of art history to our anthropocentric worldview, Surman questions the role of animals in life and art. Through painting, drawing and film, he takes animal bodies as his subject, and considers the labour of nature in the shadow of our human lives.

Whilst concerned with particular themes within their work, both artists take us on an adventure through paint; through art history, colour theory, line weight, attitude and rhythm. This is their language, their way of communicating sensory experience and feeling, but above all, it is their way
of exploring the act and the result of painting itself.
