Jan Maarten Voskuil (Arnhem, 1964) tries to escape the limitations of painting. He has a reductive way of working and a conceptual approach to the painting.

He approaches the painting as a construction. He turns the stretcher into a spatial construction before it is tightened and by doing so creating sloping surfaces. The use of geometry, in particular the circle, in the design of the stretcher as well as playing with monochrome painting shows kinship with minimalism from the sixties and seventies. With the spatial constructions he builds new, often modular paintings by which he manages to bypass self-imposed limitations.

By doing so he expands his work into a multifaceted oeuvre that explores the boundary
between painting, sculpture, design and architecture.
