Richard Garrison – Robert Henry Contemporary, Brooklyn
Born 1971, Albany, New York, USA
My work involves systematic processes that reflect a critical yet tolerant perspective of familiar elements within the suburban American landscape. Materials from consumer culture are analyzed and restructured to create personal, and often absurd, abstractions that examine visual, conceptual, and emotional aspects of consumerism.
Integrating imagery, color, and scale with conceptual intent, these abstractions transform the elements of design associated with advertisements, drive-thru menus, product packaging, parking lots and big box stores. Evoking a sense of ambiguity among the familiar, my work offers an objective yet intimate encounter with banality.
