Carol Young – Beatriz Esguerra Art, Bogota
Born 1952 in Montevideo, Uruguay
Working from the intricate fields of subliminal memory, which influences in unexpected ways how we perceive the world and interact with others, this installation seeks to evoke those memories through dialogue with the emptiness of a blank page. Drawing on an image that can be associated with an archaic library, with pages and parchments, it evokes the sign-filled archive of moments that have occurred... unknown and hidden information that urges to be classified, reviewed and studied.
The rolls that Young arranges in the semidarkness contain no writing, but upon them the symbols of creases and folds are recorded, somewhat like a gestural "protowriting", putting into action a certain language of touch; a subtle field in which resides the evidence of our being in this world, for the tactile experience precisely involves complex relationships between the body, others and the world.
