Danny Jauregui: My artistic practice centers on investigating the role documentary photography historically played in the oppression of queer Americans. If traditional modes of “recording” require presence, where does that leave a population that was legally and socially forced into hiding? If a population was forced to be invisible (closeted), how did they get “recorded”?
Given this forced invisibility an “artifact deficit” exists within queer history and my work creates “substitute” artifacts as a way of calling attention to the void the very substitutes are intended to fill. Ultimately I am proposing new forms of “documenting”, deeming traditional forms insufficient at capturing loss, absence, and invisibility.
