Carlos Jiménez Cahua (b. 1986, Peru) is a multimedia artist of Peruvian decent, based in New York, NY. He was awarded his B.A. from Princeton University in 2008, and his M.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2012.

Jiménez Cahua's work stems from a curiosity about the simultaneous ease and complexity of images, with regard to the (overly-)sophisticated perceptual and sensorial apparatus of humans. Cahua investigates the process of photography, both analog and digital, in the tradition of the Structuralist filmmakers. His work in photography, installation, video and sculpture is driven by a pursuit of the ontological limits of medium and aesthetic overlap.

His compositions are strong but unfussy, allowing for subtleties of color and light.  Ciudad de los Reyes is a series in which Cahua implements a formal approach to photography to capture the bleak Peruvian landscape, a tonal palette of neutrals. Simpler are the images in his series entitled, That That Is Is or I’m Not Going To Lie. A chair, an electrical outlet, a brick wall are featured in monochromatic compositions. Cahua’s imagery is thoughtful, deliberate.

Cahua’s work focuses on the simplicity of color relationships and geometric form. In one series of chromogenic prints, Cahua layers several colored copies of a portrait together to create a nearly unrecognizable distortion of the face. Another series explores a tactile relationship with photographic process. Paper is purposefully folded and exposed to colored light, resulting in geometric compositions of scattered color shapes.
