The individual’s relationship to society may be a tenuous, fragile bond. Society provokes anxious interrogation of the self: are we different or the same? Does our sameness bind us together or prevent us from making a true connection? Yanzi Zhang reveals both a distinctly Chinese approach to considering our humanity, and a recognition that our origins and basic needs are common to humans globally. The acknowledgement of this common heritage is a starting point for a journey of healing and mental refreshment. Bei Dao, the Chinese poet of solitude, described Yanzi Zhang’s works as representing “ a subtle balance between art and healing” — visitors to Galerie Ora-Ora’s booth will be faced with the challenge of separating the two.

Yanzi Zhang was born in Guanxi, China in 1967, later graduating with a BA and MA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (“ CAFA” ) in Beijing. Offering a contemporary aesthetic presented through diverse and experimental media (including gauze bandages and analgesic plasters), Yanzi Zhang merges classical technical fluency with a unique contemporary vision. Recent shows have included the Today Art Museum in Beijing in 2013 and 5Art Guangzhou and Art Basel HK in 2015. In the summer of 2016, Yanzi Zhang was the subject of a two-month exhibition entitled “ Essence” at Hong Kong’s Museum of Medical Sciences. Yanzi Zhang’s art is collected by the National Art Museum of China, the Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing and the Audemars Piguet Museum.

Yanzi Zhang is based in Beijing and is editor of CAFA Art Info. Founded in Hong Kong in 2006, Galerie Ora-Ora is a research-based Asian contemporary fine art gallery specializing in Contemporary Ink, sculptures, and the discovery of emerging talent.
