Nancy Margolis Gallery, New York
Aubrey Levinthal is a still life and figurative painter living and working in Philadelphia. At a glance, her oil-on-panel paintings appear to be simple translations of the everyday moments we all experience in the course of our daily lives. These brief moments, whether ephemeral or banal, are applauded and elevated by the artist through her skillful blend of abstraction and figuration. Levinthal understands that the commonplace has its own beauty, and no matter how inconsequential, it is embraced in the paintings and remains important. She confronts familial interaction and varied accompanying emotions directly and without apology. By allowing viewers to glimpse the intimate and personal exchanges in her own life, Levinthal invites us to examine the world from her vantage point, as well as from our own.
Aubrey Levinthal received an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2011. She has participated in numerous exhibitions including recent group shows at Nancy Margolis Gallery (2018), Mrs. Gallery (2017), Queens College Art Center NY (2016), and Woodmere Art Museum (2016). In September 2017 she had her first solo show in New York at Nancy Margolis Gallery, which was met with tremendous success. The filmmakers, Gorky’s Granddaughter, interviewed Levinthal in October 2017 and published the video on their website. Her work has been featured in ARTnews, the NYSUN, Harper’s Magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer and New American Paintings. Levinthal is the recent recipient of her second Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant and a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland in 2017.
