Bret Slater: I would like to propose that the nature of painting, which has continued long after the Paleolithic rituals from which it was born, retains in itself the properties of a ritual act. Highly spiritual if not religious, ceremonial, expressionistic, soulful, academic and in constant historical dialog; it is an endeavor dealing with both what is known and what is unknown, an attempt to merge what exists and what does not.
