Ian Toms
Born 1983 in Aurora, Illinois, USA
The work tends toward a dark bent with the intention of reflecting something beyond its appearance. Specific icons and images, along with words that have an immediate connotation of death or darkness, heighten the awareness of the realness of situations. This realness, in turn is granted a history, much like a scar or memory. The work may appear dense and hard to understand, but using imagery that is countercultural creates a heightened sense of recognition. Once beyond personal hang-ups or distaste, an apprehension takes over, producing a more articulate language with its brutal honesty.
