Eva Lake
Born 1956 in Los Angeles, California, USA
In her masterful collages, Portland, OR based Eva Lake creates wondrous new wholes from fragmented parts. At VOLTA NY, we’re presenting photomontages from three bodies of work, The Judd Montages, Targets and the most recent Anonymous Women series.
Over the years, Lake worked in different mediums - painting, drawing, music, dance, performance - but photomontage was and is the most constant. And it is the most private and personal; it is the medium most about her own life and whatever concerned her at the time - love, labor, style, war, work, loneliness, respect, art.
Eva Lake’s photomontages engage in a dialogue with art history, evoking artists from John Heartfield and Richard Hamilton, to Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. In Lake’s works, we sense that the goddess of art history has collided with the artist’s modern day vision.
