Cathy de Monchaux Presented by: FRED LTD. 1960, London, United Kingdom
Cathy De Monchaux’s works have been widely exhibited internationally and are presented in museum collections such as The Tate Gallery, The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, and The Albright Knox Collection, New York. In 1997 she was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize for her solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, UK.
De Monchaux’s 2007 solo show at FRED represented a unique moment in her creative process and marked a departure in her working practice. Premiering at VOLTA is a group of new works, which reflect these changes in her artistic vision. This presentation includes new works from her ‘Battle Scene’ series, tiny tableaux within perspectival recesses depicting images of war, conflict and armed struggle. Also on display are new sculptures that return to and rework De Monchaux’s earlier interest in totemic fetish objects and idols. The exhibition also includes a new sculptural drawing that references Islamic patterning and introduces a new colour palette of glimmering hues.
