Martin Klimas photographs ‘still lifes’ that simultaneously possess all the characteristics that contradict such a classification. The Düsseldorf artist, using a high-pressure shooting device he developed himself, fires at a carefully arranged ensemble of flowers and vase, while the camera – its high-speed shutter released by the sound of the impact – takes a single photo. With his new series, Klimas visualizes the contradiction between the simultaneity of before and after, of absolute standstill and movement. Above, the arrangement remains intact while, below, it is already in dissolution. Capturing this transitory moment is an over-the-top way of defining the photographic medium as an historical witness.
